CDL Resume Templates That Do Not Break in ATS Software

A resume template is a formatting decision, and for drivers it is mostly a risk decision. Anything with columns, text boxes, icons or graphics can be scrambled by the software a carrier uses to read applications. The safest templates look plain — and plain is what recruiters are used to reading.

There are four templates here. All four are single column, all four use real text rather than images, and none of them use star ratings, skill bars, photos or infographics. They differ in typeface, spacing and how much they fit on a page.

Pick based on where you are applying and how much history you have.

Who this is for

  • Drivers applying through carrier portals and job boards
  • Drivers with long work histories who need space
  • New drivers who need the page to look full without padding
  • Anyone who has had a resume come back looking scrambled

CDL details that matter here

  • Classic CDL — traditional serif layout with a centered name. The safest choice for conservative carriers and older recruiters.
  • Modern Driver — clean sans-serif with a restrained navy accent. Good for private fleets, distributors and municipal jobs.
  • ATS Minimal — no rules, no columns, plain headings, generous spacing. Use this for any large carrier application portal.
  • Experienced Driver — tighter metrics so ten or fifteen years of history stays readable without spilling onto a third page.

Equipment worth listing

  • Every template renders the same content model, so switching templates never changes your facts
  • Equipment and endorsements always appear as plain text lists

Skills recruiters look for

Only include the ones that are genuinely true of you.

  • Skills appear as a simple two-column list or as an inline comma list, depending on template
  • The ATS Minimal template uses the inline form, which is the most reliably parsed

Certifications and endorsements

  • Certifications always render as a plain bulleted list in every template

Example wording

About the examples on this page: every example is written by us as an illustration. None describes a real driver or a real customer, and no figure in any example is real. Use the structure, never the content.

Example professional summary

Templates do not change your wording. The same summary renders in all four; only typeface, spacing and rules differ.

Example experience bullets

Rule of thumb: applying to a large carrier through an online portal, use ATS Minimal.

Rule of thumb: emailing a resume to a local employer or handing it over in person, Classic CDL or Modern Driver look better on paper.

Rule of thumb: more than four employers in the last ten years, use Experienced Driver.

Common mistakes

Downloading a "creative" template from a design site

Those are built for portfolios, not for driver hiring. Columns, sidebars and icon sets are the most common cause of a resume arriving as unreadable text on the recruiter's side.

Putting contact details in the page header

Word headers and footers are frequently dropped by parsers. Your phone number belongs in the body of the document.

Using tables to line up dates

Tables parse unpredictably. Right-aligned tab stops, which these templates use, do not.

Shrinking the font to fit

Below about 9.5pt the document becomes hard to read on a phone, which is where a lot of recruiters open it. Cut content instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch templates after I build my resume?

Yes, and it does not change your content — only the layout. You can switch before downloading.

Which template is best for a big carrier?

ATS Minimal. It is deliberately plain so parsing is as reliable as possible.

Are these Word templates I can download and fill in?

They are live templates in the builder rather than blank files. You answer questions, the resume is generated into the template you pick, and you download a finished PDF and DOCX.

Do the templates include a photo area?

No, deliberately. Photos are not standard on US resumes and they hurt more than they help in driver hiring.
